In accordance with the provisions of 38 U.S.C. 1744, this part sets forth the mechanism for a State to obtain payments to assist a State Veterans Home (SVH) in the hiring and retention of nurses for the purpose of reducing nursing shortages at that SVH.

A SVH utilized funds to assist a certified nursing assistant become a licensed practical nurse through a scholarship. In addition, the SVH assisted certified nursing assistants obtain reference books and certifications.
A total of 67 individual State Veterans Homes submitted an application to the Office of Geriatrics & Extended Care for federal funding to states to promote and support the hiring and retention of nurses. The total amount of federal funding approved to support states in FY 2024 was $5,610,728.53.
