The Emergency Relief Program is intended to provide operating assistance and capital funding to aid recipients and sub-recipients in restoring public transportation service, and in repairing and reconstructing public transportation assets to a state of good repair, as expeditiously as possible following an emergency or major disaster.

FTA continued helping transit agencies in states and territories affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to rebuild damaged transit facilities and services and to make transit systems more resilient to future disasters.
FTA made a final allocation of funding for transit systems affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. FTA also allocated funding for transit systems affected by Major Declared Disasters in calendar years 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2022 from the $213 million provided by Congress in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023.
