Program objective

To partner with like-minded organizations in managing the SMART scholarship program and in award scholars to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in any of the 24 STEM disciplines of critical importance to the national security mission. The SMART Scholarship Program also offers internships to all scholars and a guaranteed placement into a civilian scientist or engineer position after completion of academic degree.

    Increased the intellectual capacity and proficiency of future scientists and engineers in disciplines critical to defense; and increased the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) qualified individuals in the DoD workforce.

During FY2016, the total number of scholars that are not DoD employees was 500.

  4. 2017

    During FY2017, the total number of scholars that are not DoD employees is 750.

  5. 2024

    During the 2023-2024 SMART program cycle, more than 6,000 scholarship applications were received which almost doubled the 3,300+ applications received in 2023. In 2024, 499 SMART scholarships were awarded - the largest new scholarship cohort awarded to date, and about 600 SMART scholars conducted their research and engineering internships at more than 100 DoD sponsoring facilities.
