Program objective

To obtain support for the management, development, implementation, research/evaluation, and furthering of new and existing partnerships between the Department of Defense and its National Defense Education Program (NDEP) for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and outreach activities, and other educational outreach efforts, as well as STEM workforce development initiatives across the PreK through College continuum, to include skilled trades and advanced manufacturing that do not require four-year degrees . The scope will cover all 50 states, U.S. territories, and DoDEA schools.

  1. 2020

    In the 2019-2020 solicitation cycle, the Department of Defense and its National Defense Education Program (NDEP) announced the selection of 12 awardees for the National Defense Education Program Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) awards.

    These distinguished educational and industry partners will receive more than $31 million over a three-year period to establish or expand STEM education, outreach, and workforce initiatives for students and educators from early childhood through postsecondary. The goal of this effort is to establish programs to better position the current and next-generation STEM workforce, which is critical to the Department and our Nation’s security.

  2. 2021

    The National Defense Education Program (NDEP) successfully published a funding opportunity announcement in DEC of 2020, for the 2020-2021 solicitation cycle. Grant awards will be completed and made publicly available by SEP/OCT 2021.

  3. 2022

    The National Defense Education Program (NDEP) successfully published a Notice of Funding Opportunity HQ003422NFOEASD01 on 25 JAN 2022. Cooperative Agreement awards will be fully executed by 1 SEP 2022.

  4. 2023

    The National Defense Education Program (NDEP) successfully published an Open Five-Year Notice of Funding Opportunity HQ003423NFOEASD01 on January 2023. Annual funding opportunities will be posted as amendments under this listing. The 2023 awards was fully executed by September 2023.

  5. 2024

    The National Defense Education Program (NDEP) successfully published a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA # W911NF-24-S-0003) for the Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC) cooperative agreement on 11 January 2024 on Grants.gov. DSEC cooperative agreement was awarded on 2 August 2024. DSEC is a collaborative partnership between States, local governments, Indian tribes, Institutions of Higher Education (IHE), nonprofit organizations, for‐profit organizations and other partners in STEM that aims to broaden STEM literacy and prepare the STEM workforce of the future for the Department of Defense and for the Nation.

    Under the Open Five-Year Notice of Funding Opportunity HQ003423NFOEASD01, NDEP successfully posted an amendment for a funding opportunity under its civil society program requirement. In September 2024, NDEP successfully awarded three civil society grants.
