With respect to nonfederal lands, to develop community wildfire protection plans for communities considered at-risk to damage and loss of values or life from wildfire, and to update community wildfire protection plans that are greater than ten years old. To implement projects described in a community wildfire protection plan or equivalent document less than ten years old for the purposes of protecting an at-risk community from damage or loss from wildfire, including but not limited to wildfire mitigation, fuel reduction, prevention and response.

Through the Community Wildfire Defense Grant program communities were able to create or update their Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) and implement projects identified in those plans to reduce the risk of catastrophic fire in or near their communities.
