Program objective

To plan for, establish, manage and protect trees, forests, green spaces and related natural resources in and adjacent to cities and towns. The urban and community forestry program provides ecosystem services, social and economic benefits. It links these benefits to governmental, private and grassroots organizations and resources to improve the quality of life in these cities and towns.

  1. 2023

    The program awarded more than $1 billion in competitive grants to plant and maintain trees, combat extreme heat and climate change, and improve access to nature in cities, towns, and suburbs where more than 84% of Americans live, work, and play. 385 individual communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories, three U.S. affiliated Pacific islands, and several Tribes Nations are receiving funding.

  2. 2024

    A prime award was issued that included subawards to support community forestry on Indigenous lands. 16 subawardees were selected out of more than 50 applicants and are all Federally recognized Tribes, tribal organizations, or an organization working in a tribal community. In total, 26 Tribes will be directly impacted through these projects. The grants awarded will be used to plant trees and grow green spaces on or near Indigenous lands and projects range in focus from food sovereignty to workforce development. Overall in this fiscal year, $25.2M was awarded to tribal nations. $4M was awarded directly to Tribes, $11.2M was awarded to State agencies for tribal subawards, and $10M to pass-through entities for tribal subawards.
