Program objective

These funds are intended to support the participation of farmers’ markets in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP.) Specifically, the goals of FMSSG are to increase SNAP accessibility and participation at farmers’ markets, and support the establishment, expansion, and promotion of SNAP/Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) services at farmers’ markets.

  1. 2016

    FY16 FMSSG is projected to fund nine projects for a total of $1,300,000. In FY 16, FMSSG funded three projects for a total of $532,014

  2. 2017

    There were no new projects funded during this period.

  3. 2018

    Currently there is no plan to fund new projects during this period.

  4. 2019

    New awards are currently being processed to be awarded by September 30, 2019.

  5. 2021

    More than 2200 direct marketing farmers and farmers’ markets used the SNAP Mobile Processing App in FY2021 to complete more than $15M in SNAP redemptions.

  6. 2024

    Accomplishments include:

    • $104 million in SNAP sales and $55m in credit/debit sales for a total impact of nearly $160m since the start of the currently funded mobile application program.
    • $35 Million in SNAP sales in 2022 from Direct Marketing Farmers and Farmers Markets who used the equipment funded through this grant opportunity. This is an increase of 36.5% from 2021.
    • 56% of total Farmers Markets and Direct Marketing Farmers SNAP sales nationally in 2023 redeemed through the mobile application funded through this grant opportunity.

  7. 2025

    The grant intends to continue expanding access to the SNAP program through FM and DMF use of a mobile application in current and future grant opportunities.

As approved by Congress in the President’s FY 2014 budget request for FNS (The Food and Nutrition Service: 2014, Explanatory Notes), these funds are intended to support “the participation of farmers’ markets in SNAP by providing equipment and support grants to new markets and those currently participating in the program."
